Title: Duo In Carne Una
Series: Genus
Fandoms: Castle
Rating: NC-17
Genre: Horror, Science Fiction, Romance, Angst.
Warnings: Squick, panic attacks/PTSD, and we'll say dub-con for various abstract reasons.
Details: Slash, AU, genre!crack, angst, body horror, xenophilia, starfish aliens, tentacles, kink, unbetad.
Characters/Pairings:Castle―Javier Esposito/Kevin Ryan, Kevin/Jenny.
Wordcount: 9,079
Summary: Months after the revelations which challenged everything he knew about his partner—and in the face of his looming wedding—Kevin makes his choice. (Sequel to "Sui Generis".)
Notes: More weirdness from me. I'll pretend that you're surprised. This one is a lot more romantic than the first, but there's also a lot of...other stuff. Think Jerry McGuire meets National Geographic meets "At the Mountains of Madness" (or "You had me at 'shoggoth'.").
This is where I start pointing at the order in which the listed genres appear...but, I'm also incapable of writing a tragedy, and on the off chance I ever did I would definitely label it as such.
(Which is, I guess, my way of reassuring you all that no one is about to die or get eaten.)

Just thinking about what he had to do was gutting him. Still, it felt...right to him, just the same. )

Three days in, and I've already gotten a bit discourage. I've only got three hundred words... But that's not why I'm probably not going to make it.

No, the reason I probably won't make it is because Zeretal has dragged into playing a new MUD... The game is set in modern day New England, but I'm apparently going to be playing a Bronze Age sorcerer from an alternate dimension who can shapeshift into a dinosaur.

You know. Because that happens.

The only logical argument I've heard for the candidate yet.

This pisses me off on so many levels. The mandate of TV Tropes is to catalog examples of elements of plot, story, and rhetoric used in storytelling and media. By playing it "safe" (and choosing the cash from Google ads over its own content) TV Tropes is its failing at its own purpose, and undermining its integrity as an archive. If a trope exists, it belongs there. They shouldn't get to pick and choose.

Originally posted by [livejournal.com profile] dancingdragon3 at Attention feminists! TV Tropes deletes all rape tropes
Censorship and cultural insensitivity continue with the deletion of all references to rape on the TV Tropes website. Do they think that it will go away if you don't talk about it?

Article at The Mary Sue

TV Tropes claims they did it so as not to encourage rape. I am doubtful of this explanation.

From DemandProgress.org:

Do you really own the smartphone you’re using to read this email?  If you sold your computer, would you be breaking the law? A federal court in New York says you would be.

It's unbelievable, but trademark and copyright holders really are trying to take away your right to sell things that you own: Please add your name at right to fight back.

If we don't speak out now, we won’t be able to sell almost anything we own -- and if we do, we'll face charges for violating intellectual property law!

First-Sale Doctrine gives us the right to sell most property we own. But if the Supreme Court supports the lower court’s decision, we won't really “own” anything if it's been made in a different country.  We expect them to issue a ruling later this year.

If we want to sell products that were made abroad, from Macbooks and iPhones to our clothing and textbooks -- even our homes -- we'll have to ask copyright holders for permission first.  And they'll have the right to deny it!

It's bad for so many reasons:  It'll undermine Craigslist and Ebay, hurt the environment, increase incentives for manufacturers to make things and move jobs off-shore, and effectively ban the traditional American yard sale.

I've got what is possibly the biggest nerd boner of my life right now. I just watched Kevin Smith: Burn in Hell on EPIX. I recommend it hard core (though careful, because he spoils the end of Red State). I laughed so hard through most of it my stomach still hurts.

More than that, though, he has this long, run-on bit where he cut a metaphor for creating that just felt so spot-on. Because I may not have ever fallen in love, but the story he told parallels how I feel when I'm writing so perfectly that it left me in fucking tears.

I mean, I'm not going to make any huge life-changing decision because I had a religious experience listening to a celebrity talk about fucking his wife in a Denny's bathroom, but I'm more convinced than ever that changing my major from media arts to film would be the best step for me. I've been chewing over the decision for a while now, and the way I feel right now just reaffirms the direction in which I've been leaning.

So, um, teary and shit. I blame organs. Buh-bye now.

Warning: serious baggage and venting. HEED this if other people's personal stuff might make you uncomfortable. I wasn't even sure I wanted to make this post visible.

Btw, have you incorporated your uterus today? )

Just a random thought before I head off to dream land...

I don't usually have a problem with het (as long as Ryan and Esposito are not involved in it), and who doesn't like a little gen now and then? But what I can't stand, like, at all is when writers of het or gen feel the need to proclaim in their summary (often in OBNOXIOUS CAPITAL LETTERS):

Etc, and etc. God, we get it. I usually assume it's not slash if it's not labled as such. I get that we're the fringe of the fringe in fandom (though within our fringe are fringes still, but I digress).

Please, for the love of God don't do this. I've run across too many stories I'd wanted to read, but just couldn't after I saw that. Do you know why, hypothetical het and gen writers who are about as likely to ever see my journal as I am to dance the polka (once in middle school, never again)?

I get its not your thing. I don't expect everyone to like the shit that I like, but think of it this way: Say you were a fan of both science fiction and fantasy. Would you want to read a sci-fi novel that read "Omg u gais, NO DRAGONS!"? I know if I saw that I would feel like my tastes and the validity of the entire genre were being insulted.

And it just...doesn't lend itself to an attractive or helpful summary anyway.

(brought to you by a Sluggard cheezed off because of a Psych fic that probably had something to do with werewolves, but now we'll never know)

Does anyone else have this issue? Because it kills my appetite for a fic me like finding half a cockroach in the third bite of cereal.

God, I hate FF.net anyway...

So the problem with trying to be subtle is that it occasionally falls badly short. Sometimes that's the fault of the reader for just being too thick to get it, but more often than not it's because you've assumed that you've articulated what was in your head in a way even resembling clear. And when what is going on in your head is sort of a snarled mess anyway, well... It's not hard to see how misunderstandings occur.

I tried to play an April Fools' Day prank and failed.

I'm sure that's happened to a lot of people over the years, with such disastrous results as loss of homes, lives, and horseradish. This was nothing so cataclysmic, but it did leave me feeling a little dumb.

April 1st is Castle's birthday in canon. I thought that I could get away with something cute. So today I posted an interlude for Black Edelweiss that suggested (okay, outright stated) that Konrad Reichardt is Castle's father. I thought I could at least get a giggle out of it. Of course, I failed to take into account the fact that my reputation as a ficwriter is built on such things as zombies, werewolves, aliens, and fairytale mice...

So, yeah, I miscalculated that one. And here I am posting this 11:30 my time, April Fools' not quite gone yet, lamenting my failure to pull a fast one.

Okay, so the funny thing is that Konrad being Castle's father wasn't the joke. It was it being a joke that was supposed to be the joke. But nobody picked up on the April 1st thing, probably because it is Castle's birthday, which was my excuse for posting "real" Zeitgeist canon that I was tired of sitting on but not quite ready to actually reveal as a "joke" anyway. So...yeah. Epic fail on my part.

Though I'm behind in posting a Valentine's story for [livejournal.com profile] ryanandesposito, I'd like to take the time to share with you an article about three works: one of them dubiously called "art", and two created by artists enacting the holy Discordian sacrament of Parody upon it.

A warning, the first painting seen through this link is graphic and disturbing. Fortunately, it is meant to be. However, it is still profoundly less disturbing than the original it spoofs, which clearly wasn't.

Make sure you visit the (linked) site for the original so that you can see the helpful hover-over action describing each symbolic element of the piece. (Brr. Just. Fucking. Brrr.)

Then, visit the second parody of the site itself (also linked) and see the reworked captions.

Hail Eris.

ETA: So, I'll admit I cheated on the timestamp for this (though not by much), but I posted it on my Facebook before midnight, so it still totally counts...
