Wtf: Peeve of the Week

Death at a Funeral was a great movie, don't get me wrong, I just wish I'd known when I first saw it that it was a remake of an earlier film. I've thrown huge cranky fits about the remake of Being Human (because the original was pretty much perfect), and I refused to watch Let Me In before I'd seen Let the Right One In. It just annoys the crap out of me when they remake European movies and TV. Or, more than just annoying, it's a little bit insulting that the people marketing entertainment think that things need to be made more American in order for us to enjoy or understand them.

(Which yeah, I know I'm a hardwired xenophile, and the above is overwhelmingly true, but I like to pretend otherwise...)

That said, in this single case, I don't think the original film would have reached anywhere near the same audience as the remake. I think you do need a black American cast to reach a black American audience. I don't think that's racist, most human beings just like to see stories about other human beings like them. But it's interesting, when you watch both films, to see how a movie can be remade practically scene for scene in two very different cultural settings and really show how they're really just the same. Because people are people, and their lives are filled with the same bullshit issues.

Also, I think it's awesome that Peter Dinklage is in both versions. He's fucking boss.
