Once upon a time there was a little girl who watched a show with her grandmother. One day she had this silly idea of writing a funny werewolf story about the characters on the show. She plotted out a lot of hilarious, snappy dialog in keeping with the show's light tone, and shared it with her sister, who also thought it was funny.

They laughed and laughed.

Then she started to write the prose to fill in the gaps between the dialog. As she did, she noticed that something was creeping in that she hadn't planned in the beginning. But the writing was easy and she really enjoyed it, and so she kept typing until she'd finished the first chapter. And it was good, she felt, but she realized that somewhere along the line, the chapter had turned out a lot more serious than she intended...

Well, she thought, the POV character hasn't figured out what's going on. Surely, as soon as he finds out that there are werewolves involved, it will get funny again.

As she got to the second chapter, she wrote the scene where the character confessed his belief that he'd been bitten by a werewolf, and lo and behold, she found herself puzzled as the shift in tone did not occur. Because it occurred to her that while some very unusual things had happened on the show, a delusion as serious as believing you've turned into an animal is serious business, and the POV character would probably not find any of this very funny.

That's really unfortunate, though the girl with a pout, but at least it'll get proven to be true in the next chapter, so there's really nothing to worry about.

Only, as she began writing the third chapter, things were again turning out against expectations. Now, the POV character, having found out that one really shouldn't expect to find anything useful on lycanthropy online, has narrowed down his best friend's symptoms to the entirely rational explanation of a brain tumor or schizophrenia.

The girl stopped writing with a sigh.

"What's wrong," asked her sister (who was really only asking because she knew she'd get an earful anyway).

"Well," said the girl, "I started this funny story, you know, the one with the werewolf in the elevator? Only, somehow it's turned out all wrong."

"Wrong? What do you mean?"

"Well, I still like it very much," said the girl, "Only it's really not very funny anymore."

"What do you mean it's not funny?"

"Well, there's this scene I like to think of as "Javier's Reverse Rape-Shower"--"

"Okay, stop," said the sister, "You really have a problem."

"I know," confessed the girl, "I really did try to make it light hearted and funny, like the show. I don't know where this crap comes from."

"Sucks to be you," said the sister, and went back to reading her Losers fics.

The girl sighed once more and returned to her keyboard.

Maybe there is hope, she thought, optimistically. Maybe, once Castle finds out what's going on...

The girl smiled.

And so it was that Richard Castle's inability to take almost anything seriously rescued the fic from its quagmire of angst...

For one chapter, at least.

The End.
